Greg is part of a new tradition in American painting that bridges the gap between abstraction, expressionism, and traditional plein-air painting. Drawing images from natural motifs, he believes nature overpowers the human mind with an infinite variety of forms and colors. When viewing his art, it is easy to see how Greg emphasizes space and color in his landscapes. His compositions are extremely dynamic, however do now jar the sensibilities of the observer. He is able to use many colors without dominating the canvas, and yet his works are dramatic. The formal structure of the work yields to his expressive use of color, which often conveys the heat of light, the cool of shadow, or the conflicting colors found in neighboring plants and rocks. His landscapes are sometimes jagged and the waters suggest quiet turmoil. The magic is how these images draw you to them by their realism coupled with an element of fantasy.
The process begins with an image either obtained through sketches on site or through photography. A harmonizing under-painting is initially begun along with intricate measurements of the subject matter. Painting begins quickly with a desire to cover the entire canvas as quickly as possible to get an overall sense of the composition. When the painting is blocked in, decisions of color are initially formed in a subjective expressionistic manner. Aspects of atmosphere and space are strengthened and related to the color plan. Resolving color harmonies is the longest process in painting along with creating attractive value patterns to achieve the proper sense of light. Vibrations of light and color can often take numerous re-paintings to accomplish – each painting is entirely unique in its process from start to finish as is the problems encountered to complete them.
Greg has collectors throughout the United States and the world — including Australia, Canada, and Germany. He shows work in Santa Fe, NM, Sedona AZ, Palm Springs CA, and Lake Havasu City, AZ. Greg is also a teacher of the arts and has weekly classes teaching advanced pastel and oil painting.
