Paula Narbutovskih

Paula Narbutovskih is an American artist known for her vibrant interpretations of the American Southwest, working in oils, pastels, and watercolor. Her paintings capture the region’s distinctive light, color, and atmosphere with a sensibility that is both grounded in observation and deeply expressive.

Her path as an artist was shaped early by a background rooted in curiosity and careful observation. In 1972, she moved to New York to study at the Art Students League, where she trained intensively in drawing and anatomy under Robert Hale. A pivotal visit to New Mexico in 1979 led her to leave New York behind, drawn by the clarity of light and the expansive desert landscape that would become central to her work.

While her paintings remain representational, they extend beyond direct depiction. Her landscapes often carry a dreamlike, almost surreal quality, emphasizing mood and emotional resonance as much as place. Through subtle shifts in color and form, she conveys not only the physical beauty of the land, but the experience of being within it—its stillness, energy, and quiet intensity.

Her work has been exhibited in museums and collected internationally, reflecting a broad and enduring appeal. Today, Narbutovskih lives and works in Abiquiú, New Mexico, where she maintains her studio and remains deeply connected to the landscape that inspires her. Her work is exclusively represented by San Francisco Street Gallery in Santa Fe.
