Janet O’Neal is a multimedia artist, photographer, and educator known for her vibrant abstract works and richly layered assemblages. Her work is characterized by a dynamic use of color, texture, and material, creating compositions that feel both energetic and immersive.
Originally from Raleigh, North Carolina, she graduated from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill with a degree in Administration of Criminal Justice and a background in art. Since 1986, she has maintained a full-time studio practice, continually evolving her work through experimentation and exploration.
O’Neal’s artistic journey spans a wide range of mediums, including painting, printmaking, ceramics, sculpture, photography, and video. Over time, her practice has developed into a distinctive fusion of techniques, combining found objects with layered abstraction, encaustic, resin, and complex surface textures. This multidisciplinary approach allows her to create work that is both visually striking and conceptually driven.
Her recent work places a strong emphasis on digital photography and conceptual multimedia installations. This direction has brought her recognition in several prestigious competitions, including the Georgia O’Keeffe International Photography Competition, the International Pollux Awards, and the Julia Margaret Cameron Awards.
Now based in Santa Fe, New Mexico, O’Neal continues to push the boundaries of her practice, creating work that reflects both innovation and a sustained commitment to artistic exploration.
