Melanie Simard

Mélanie Simard is a Canadian artist known for her vibrant compositions and innovative use of materials. Working primarily in acrylic, her practice has evolved to incorporate unconventional surfaces, most notably aluminum, which plays a central role in her work.

Born in 1975 in Boischatel, near Quebec, Simard began exploring art at a young age, studying a variety of techniques before ultimately focusing on painting. While she initially gained recognition for her still life work, her desire to push beyond traditional approaches led her to experiment with new materials and processes. This exploration introduced her to aluminum—a medium that would become a defining element in her artistic development.

Simard began by integrating aluminum foil into textured canvases, allowing the metallic surface to interact with paint in unexpected ways. She later expanded this approach by working directly with aluminum plates, sanding and scratching the surface to reveal depth and create distinctive textures. Combined with her bold and expressive use of color, these techniques give her work a dynamic and tactile quality.

Her paintings reflect a balance between experimentation and intention, blending materials, color, and personal expression. Through this process, Simard creates work that engages both visually and emotionally, encouraging a heightened awareness of time, space, and the subtle moments within everyday life.
